About ITMO Research

Research and development have always been top priorities for ITMO University. Many findings by the researchers of our university in XX century determined the development of Soviet and global science and technology.

New optical systems for surveying equipment and wide-format lenses were developed based on the principle of module synthesis by Professor Rusinov. Professor Denisjuk’s discovery made possible the creation of 3D holography in reflected light. Professor Rodionov’s theory of computer optics led to the development of automated research and design of optical systems. Research in the area of computer logic by professors Fedorov and Djaliashvili laid the foundation for the development of pseudo-natural computer interfaces. Work on the theory of algorithms by professor Majorov allowed to create the first automation systems for computer programming.

Many projects by our staff found commercial application and brought on significant technological and economic change. The use of wide-angle lenses “Russar” constructed by Prof. Rusinov allowed in the 1960s to complete cartographic aerial photography of the Soviet Union, including the North Pole. The first universal computing machine for engineering calculations “LITMO-1” was constructed at our university in 1956. At the end of the 1960’s, Prof. Radionov’s team research of optical systems led to the construction of the Large Altazimuth Telescope (BTA), the largest optical telescope in Eurasia, with a 6 meter aperture and a single piece glass mirror. In 1970, the Committee on Discoveries of USSR registered the discovery of 3D holography in reflected light by Prof. Denisjuk. In 1986, interplanetary station “Vega-2” got unique shots of the nucleus of the Halley’s Comet thanks to optico-electronic telescope, developed by LITMO specialists under Prof. Tzukanova. In early 1990’s, Russian federal computer network RUNNet was developed by our university’s specialists under Prof. Vasiliev.  

Therefore, by the early XXI century ITMO University emerged as a large scientific and pedagogical center with deeply rooted traditions and unique research schools.

At the moment the university applies its resources to research and development primarily in seven areas designated as high priority: Security and Anti-Terrorism;  Nanosystems Industry;  IT Systems;  Life Sciences; Advanced Weapons, Military and Special Equipment; Transport and Space Systems; Energy Efficiency, Energy Saving and Nuclear Energy.

The top 14 technologies of interest include:

-          Basic and critical military and industrial technology for development of advanced weapons, military and special equipment,

-          Genomic, proteomic and post-genomic technologies

-          Computer modeling of nanomaterials, nanoequipment and technologies

-          Nano, bio, information and cognitive technologies

-          Technologies for diagnosing nanomaterials and nanoequipment

-          Technologies for access to broadband multimedia services

-          Technologies for information, management and navigation systems

-          Technologies for microsystems and nanoequipment

-          Technologies for receiving and processing functional nanomaterials

-          Technologies and software for distributed and high-performance computing systems

-          Technologies for monitoring and prognosis of the state of the environment, pollution prevention and elimination

-          Technologies for prediction of environmental and technological disasters

-          New generation of technologies for space and transport equipment

-          Technologies for development of an electronic component base and energy-efficient lighting equipment.

Our staff and students participate in over 45 startups and deliver high-tech products to over a dozen countries.

Combining fundamental and applied research with the educational process serves as a foundation for improving the quality of young specialists and researchers of top qualification. Students of all levels actively participate in research and report their progress at the Annual Science and Education Conference and also at the Congress of Young Scientists held by our university.
